Near 1/3 of the past century, recently, the band of Song Da 5 has achieved a dominant position equivalent to large enterprises in the world in term of hydropower construction, especially the technology of Roller Compaction Concrete (RCC) placement for high dams. Over the past ten years, Song Da 5 trademark has been associated with the great quality, progress in the hydropower projects of international scales. At Son La HPP, Lai Chau HPP, Song Da 5 created the marvellous achievements of two the highest, longest and most complex Dams with the volume of over 5 million m3 of concrete produced by roller compaction technology. Thank to the bravery of the managers of Song Da 5 in the investment of the production technology of RCC from Germany and USD 25 million conveyor belt system from Japan, the engineers and workers of the company has mastered the most advanced technology in the world- a revolution, a turning pointt has changed the mind and actions of Song Da 5 in the renewal on culture, environments, labour safety the working attitude and behaviour, scientific knowledge, etc.. The workers of Song Da 5 and other contractors completed the large dam up to over three million m3 of RCC concrete, contributing to the completion of all Son La HPP with the capacity of 2400 MW and put into operation 2 years earlier than schedule, make the profit for national economy hundreds billions. At the end of 2015, Song Da 5 completed and hand over the third largest Dam in the whole country at Lai Chau HPP with over 2 million m3 of RCC concrete.
The construction of Dam Foundation
The improvement of vision and knowledge of managers, the occupational ability of workers as well as the investment of many machines, equipment used for the construction are the main factors for Song Da 5 to compete actively with international contractors to implement the large projects. This success came in 2014 when Song Da 5 officially signed the contract with Obayashi Corporation to undertake all civil contracts of Nam Ngiep 1 HPP with the capacity of 300 MW in Nam Ngiep River, belonging Bolikhamxay province, Laos PRD. The total value reaches to approximate VND 2,500 billion in foreign country. Song Da 5 has overcome the challenges to approach a professional environment, meeting the G7 standards. With over 800 officers, engineers and workers who had been assigned to execute Nam Ngiep 1 HPP, the manpower of Song Da 5 executed all works at site. This is a great project in which Kansai Power Company is the employer. The strengths in working attitude of Song Da 5 are equivalent to those of Japanese partners comprising of straightness, equality, and punctuality, high technology ensuring the quality standards, progress and respecting the articles in the contracts. Finish the financial year of 2015, the cash flow of USD 40 million has been transferred to the bank account of the Company, contributing to the common national development. Now, Song Da 5 has become a trustful partner of Japanese employer about hydro power construction around the world, new projects that Japanese investors are investing will be given priority to Song Da 5. I came to Song Da 5 in the first days of the new year, the atmosphere of Tet holiday went away, all the engineers of the international bidding Department were busy with the proposal for a super large project with the value about $ 1.5 billion being proposed by engineers and experts from many countries for the purpose of winning the bid in this project.
At the beginning of March, 2016, We had a visit to Nam Ngiep 1 HPP, the exciting and speedy atmosphere at the Dam foundation under depth of over 30 m along with dozens of trucks, bull dozers, excavators and groups of workers who were busy with uploading and transporting rock and soil to complete the surface of foundation for the purpose of the RCC placement. Engineer Tran Huu Hung – project manager of Song Da 5 said: This is an important and urgent item that contractor should focus on the construction at first in order to prepare for the RCC placement at spillway. Now it is dry season so blast drilling and excavation should be implemented hurriedly and simultaneously. Even in the occasion of Traditional Tet Holiday in Vietnam, only less than 70 employees of special conditions can take a leave, near 800 workers of the total manpower resource of the contractor are still working at site (except for two major day of Tet), At present, the RCC production system and batching plant of the large capacity has been installed stably and put in the commission, accordingly, 2,4 km of belt has been erected in safe positions. Over 2,3 million m3 of rock and soil were excavated and removed to prepare the layout plan for the construction of coffer dam, all the equipment that are manufactured and delivered from Vietnam reaches to 7000 tons.
Many other works need to be completed after more than one year of construction; however, the early completion of these items shows the evidence for the capability of Song Da 5. It can be confirmed that this is a good start for Vietnamese contractors in the international business environment. I have the belief that Song Da 5 will accomplish their goals.
