On November 23th 2014, at Bac Me Hydropower site – Ha giang province, Song Da 5 Joint Stock Company implemented the groundbreaking ceremony for construction of Bac Me hydropower - Ha Giang province with the presence of Vietnam Trading Engineering Construction Joint Stock Corporation’ representatives and representatives of local authorities.
Bac Me Hydropower Project is located 210 km to the north from Hanoi, on the Gam River, Bac Me district, Ha Giang province. Location of the project and reservoir is in the provinces of Ha Giang and Cao Bang which are mountainous areas with big hydropower potential.
Bac Me Hydropower Project is on the Gam River, a direct tributary of the Lo River, located in Yen Phong and Phu Nam Communes, Bac Me district, Ha Giang province, about 7 km from of the new town of Bac Me to the upstream of Gam River and about 64 km from Ha Giang Town along the National Road 34 to Cao Bang.
Bac Me Hydropower Project is on the 5th cascade of flow planning for Gam River. The project is located at the middle of Gam River with the primary function of power generation. The catchment area up to the dam site is 10985km2. Average flow over years is 201m3/s, the reservoir full supply level is 138m, volume 28.89 × 106 m3, respectively, the total reservoir storage of 32.52 × 106 m3, the total installed capacity is 45MW, power generated per year is 197 × 106 kWh.
